41918891_lSkills shortages in the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) industries is reported to cost the UK economy up to £27bn a year, with the engineering industry alone producing 36,000 fewer engineers every year than what it needs.

Although this problem spans across the country, the Midlands in particular is suffering from a STEM skills shortage with reports in 2013 stating that firms had to recruit workers from overseas to fill hundreds of vacancies.

There are a number of factors to blame, but the issue of gender imbalance in STEM roles is something that, if properly addressed, would go a long way in solving this skills shortage.

Looking for a career in finance?According to a survey by skills education specialist, City & Guilds, finance ranks among the top 10 careers that make 18-24 year olds happy. In contrast, another survey by the Education and Employers Taskforce reported that only 3% of the 1,100 13-to-16 year olds surveyed said they are considering a career in finance. This is despite one in five jobs expected to be in this sector.

So, if the field of finance makes young workers happy, why aren’t the next generation considering a career in this sector? Of course, there is the small matter of today’s teenagers growing up in the thick of a global banking crisis, making the prospect of finance, particularly investment banking, extremely easy to dismiss.

And while the financial rewards for some of these jobs may be incentive enough, most workers in these roles do them because they have chosen a vocation.

Who’s Taking a ‘Workation’ and Why?

There has been increasing reports in the British press about the rise of the ‘workation’ as more and more professionals feel under pressure to take a working holiday.

Gone are the days of employees switching off their phone and leaving their laptop behind, as the workation continues to become the norm. It means employees are spending an increasing amount of vacation time fixed to the hotel’s Wi-Fi, reading more emails than paperbacks, and, in some cases, joining conference calls from the beach.
